I know a couple of girls who this programming's cool, though they don't do it themselves. I also had a female computer science teacher back in high school. She was really good at it. Taught calculus, Pascal, C, C++, Java, and VB.

Yeah, my teacher is female. She teaches math , physics, and IT classes. Nataly, I'm pretty sure you're the only female around here. We used to have one named, ...well, I can't remember but she teaches vb to little kids at her school. She does like extra help for them. I haven't seen her around in a looooong time. Your the only female now, so stick around btw, where you from?

I'm a female who programs.  Since I'm a little higher than a beginner, I wouldn't dare call myself a female programmer!

50% of the guys I meet complain that there aren't any women (they usually say girls) in programming, but then all they talk about is Star Wars, Star Trek and Batman.  And I don't know too many women who are into all three.

I know my nephew can't get enough of high tech and my niece could care less about it.  So, I don't see the next generation producing too many females in computers.

I find it interesting that there's such a huge push for women to get involved in technical careers, especially computers. In my (albeit limited) experience through high school and a little bit of college, the vast majority of girls have little to no interest in technology, beyond using cellphones and watching movies and such. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I totally agree.  Most women and young girls do not have an interest in technology beyond what it can do for them.  I wonder why there is this push to encourage more women?  Are the guys lonely at tech fairs?  Do they feel like they can possibly be a geek if a female is interested?  Or, are tech guys more open minded about having female co-workers?

There aren't that many female mechanics and I don't see a big push to get girls interested in cars.

I think part of it is the huge push for diversity in high education and corporate life. Affirmative Action has made a huge impact, to a point where women are bombarded with opportunity in certain areas, like the economically lucrative technology business. It has a lot more to do with anti-discrimination and "equal-opportunity employment" rules than guys wanting there to be more girls around. In fact, computer programmers themselves hardly contribute at all to the issue; rather, it is more highly-ranked, often less technological corporate officers that make the decisions.

Most girls would probably thing you are a geek or something if you are a programmer. That is, if your in high school, but also, you have to talk like one (ya know, star wars, star trek etc...I HATE all of them). I keep a low profile (well I try anyways) and so many people don't know I can do it. When ever people ask me what I can do, I always say "coding".... I'm a "coder". But the thing about me, is that I am much better than the average kid my age with computers (not to brag), but I have the most 'pride' in is the fact that I'm atheltic. I never had video games and such as a kid, I was always energetic with sports, and then when I got a computer, that's when I really got into it all. People may think I'm a nerd or geek or something just because of the skills I have, but if I challenge them to a 100 meter race, I'll probably school them same thing goes with hockey and soccer. Girls these days want athletic buff, ya know football guys. I played football, but left for several reason (mostly because of stupidy amongst the team). Anyways, a little off topic here. Mainly girls these days are all into buying clothes, and shopping. As said before, the only thing they are really interested in is cell phones and tv/movies.

There was female programmer here by the name of joyce and a very good programmer too. People forget to realise that the technology they use was programmed by some one or a team of people. Even the things that you generally wont realise like lifts and microwaves. With the right programming language you can just about manipulate any thing if u know what ur doing. There have been many female programmers on this site but they usually come and go, why? I dont know. I persoannly know some women, that can sit you down and talk protocols all day. Its just a shame that there isn't many of them. As for girls liking athletic buff guys, well, I think personally, things change when u get older.
