i think the rating system should be on the quality of the posts instead of the quantity, all that does is increase the spammming. you could do this by creating some more limited moderators who just go around ranking posts. this will encourage the users of the forum to type better post that isn't one word long. like "OK"

What kinds of guidelines would you suggest to the moderators who rank the posts?  (I'm thinking as an educator, where it's important to have some uniformity among different rankers.)

Whatever the guidelines might be, I agree that quality is better than quantity.

  • Eagerness to help.
  • Admitting when your not sure.
  • Spending large amounts of time on the forum.
  • Not undermining people for  'easy' problems.
  • etc...

But ultimately it's up to the Main Admin to do this and the three post moderation is in place to do this. Plus this is a new forum so everyone is trying different things out on the site so your bound to get one word and completely irrelevant posts during the 'novelty' phase

That sounds like a whole lot of work on the part of the moderators. I agree that it would be nice to have rankings like that though. There would have to be a moderator to supervise the other moderators thta were ranking, too, or at least an effective way of choosing who should do the job.

I'm kind of against post-count ranking systems as You can get a high ranking just by posting a lot. I think ultimately though as the forums grow in popularity there may be more moderators and the choice is up to A1. As outside moderators at the moment we've got TrickyRic and you can allready see why. the guy nows a lot and doesn't have the ego that some mods can have.

I also don't think you'll need moderators for the moderators as they will be carefully selected. You wont become a Mod just by showing willingness over a few days. If he returns I recon the next MOD will be Black Knight. Have a search on the old forums and see the work he and Ric did just to understand they reason for their selection.

How are moderators selected?

You'd have to ask Brian or Peter. But It will all be up to A1 so I wouldn't worry about it too much. THey do a great job and if and when they decide to appoint anyone else that person will undoubtably be the rite person.

that's very true. This is a good idea, but once again requires more work. we can do it this way,or we an do it the way java does it....we can have dollars(or pounds).....and when someone makes a good post we can just award them a dollar, the number or dollars they receive, determines the ranking. not sure how u'd do all the math tho. but as you can see, the post/ranking idea didnt work very well, as quite a few of us are way up there in 3 days.

I dont really think there should be a ranking system, there wasn't one before, and people, made do with it, ranking, but i agree, just by posting messages, makes ur rank go up. if u had more rank or less rank some one else, what it make a difference, as somestimes, even advice can help.
