I just started learning C++ & C# and haven't gotten into forums yet. I did a google and found these sites. My criteria was how long did it take to answer a question and was there a question at least once a day.

http://www.codeguru.com/forum/ - great site, lots of knowledgeable people but question can go off front page right fast.

http://cboard.cprogramming.com/ - don't know anything about this site but has a lot of traffic.

http://www.tek-tips.com/threadminder.cfm?pid=116 - have used this in VB before but didn't care for it as people didn't seem that friendly.

I don't know if you will find a friendly place in C++ as the ones I have seen have been so consumed by their language they think that they have to toute it as the greatest. But good luck and don't turn on VB programers.

I have to agree with waynespangler on http://www.codeguru.com/forum/. I am a member of this site also, try to help others when i can at least, and they have a lot of very knowledgeable people that are willing to go the extra mile to help you.  I do not know about their c++ or java forums, but in the vb.net and c# forums the people are extremely helpful.

I can help on choosing a good book on C.

I've read C How to Program, A First Book of ANSI C, C for Dummies, C by Discovery, The C Programing Language, and Problem Solving and Program Design in C. I've read a few others, but those are the introductory books I have read on C. By far the best and most complete and easiest to understand is A First Book of ANSI C. C for Dummies is just goofy, bad programming practices in it. C How to Program is horrible IMHO, they try to pack C and C++ in one book...in one course, not happening. The C Programming Language is a little dated and doesn't conform to C99 standards, so skip it. Problem Solving and Program Design in C is a good book, my second favorite.
