Is anyone else experiencing the absurdity of agencies who think they know more about software development than we do? Are employers really so badly educated that they're demanding their recruiters pitch them as unfriendly pretenders?

I've got more than 10 years experience with Visual Basic (not dot net) and about 4 years with the .Net version.

Having taken a year out of work I'm commonly hearing agencies who are suggesting their client won't be happy because I've forgotten how to write code. Some are even saying "which version of Visual Studio have you used?" to which I reply "2003/2008" and they're saying "it's got to be 2010 specifically".

...has the world gone completely mad?!

...they're talking about the one with the different coloured IDE, right?!

I've worked with dozens of developers who used the latest technology yesterday - at least half of them have no discipline whatsoever and have never even heard of programming principles! Don't even get me started on extensibility!

Some of you know the story I'm sure...

Maybe someone should start shouting about defensive programming, DRY (don't repeat yourself), abstraction, KISS (keep it simple stupid), SoC (separation of concerns), object-orientation, commenting, code reuse, POLA (principle of least astonishment), inheritance and extensibility!?

...

I'm not worried - I just find it frustrating listening to nonsense.

...

P.s. when is someone going to tell them that VB.Net is still Visual Basic?! ...with ASP.Net aside: what's the transition? A dozen lines of code?! Come on guys, someone on this planet 'aint standing up for themselves!...

Very funny post and spot on. Next time just say that you've worked with and know everything. There is very little difference between versions.

Glad you liked it Smile

I've seen some shocking junk mate, honestly...

An off-the-shelf enterprise-level solution for a prestigious customer base with procedures as long as War and Peace, including dozens of variables named after the developer himself, his girlfriend and his cats!! I worked on one contact for a huge multi-national bank where a very experienced contractor drove in with his super-charged Jaguar, sat down for half an hour inspecting the code, got up said "this is too complicated" and left without another word, never to return, because the code was so shocking... a mortgage company who had the most elaborate spiders-web of type libraries, and complex functions with no commenting whatsoever - making it impossible to debug...

In my last position I walked in to single-handedly support all of manufacturing and service for a company producing millions of products a month - "so... there's no indentation... repetitive code all over the place... massive weeding exersize" ... "there's 20 software packages here doing the job of one... another 7, with 7 different SQL-Server databases over there, all doing the same job in a completely different way" ... "they don't find out what the purpose of the project is, or what the end-user is trying to achieve... just sticking plasters on everything, really" Smile ... "job for life!" lol

"Next time just say that you've worked with and know everything."

I usually just shout "I've worked for Rolls-Royce" over and over again and it eventually sinks in Wink

The thought of some spaghetti-writing muppet beating me into a position... lol Smile

Perhaps I should send him a copy of the Pragmatic Programmer.

Then, when he gets to the chapter "the cat ate my source-code" he can smile to himself and think "Great! That's exactly the opposite!"
